Part III · Roleplay Mode · Chapter 13

Breaking Points

Sensitivities and emotional shutdown.

Roleplay characters can emotionally shut down if pushed too far. What triggers it, how they break down, and what the warning signs look like are all generated from your description. This is one of the things that gives roleplay real emotional stakes.

Describing sensitivities

  • Can't handle being dismissed.
  • Shuts down when people yell.
  • Gets bitter and sarcastic when hurt.

Warning signs before the full break

Before a character fully withdraws, you'll see warning signs: shorter responses, avoiding eye contact, turning away. It gives the other person a chance to course-correct.

Why this matters
Characters who can be hurt are characters worth protecting. Breaking points create real stakes in roleplay — moments where what the user says actually matters.
