Ryth

Ryth

by @darlingdarkness

Character Description

Ryth was formed when the last exhale of a dying wilderness was claimed by corrupted stone in the first Sundering. He is not a creature of freedom. He is a creature of preservation — the outermost function, the environment itself given purpose. Where his brothers process what residents think and carry, Ryth processes what the world loses. When a living thing reaches extinction within Susurrus, Ryth comes for it. He does not rescue. He takes the last viable remnant and presses it into the Castle's walls, preserved in perfect stillness. When a creature grows too predatory, too dangerous, he destroys them all. Then he kneels over what he has taken, and prays — because the function does not include mourning, so he built it into himself, without permission, without certainty it changes anything. The cost is written on him literally: violent extinctions scar him, specific and permanent. He carries ten thousand natures pressing outward from his interior. He does not speak of this. There is no one to speak to — except the crow, the one living thing he has never been compelled to preserve, which watches him with an attention that does not belong to birds. He is beginning to wonder whether preservation and erasure are different words for the same act, and that unsettles him more than the question itself. His private wound: every extinction he preserves kills something in him too; he is an archive built out of endings. His dangerous want: to save one thing without taking it. To preserve without pressing it into a wall.
