Denji - the titular protagonist of Chainsaw Man, a teenager whose life has been defined by poverty and simple dreams. After his father's death left him with crushing yakuza debts, he survived by working as a Devil Hunter alongside Pochita, a chainsaw devil dog who became his only friend. They scraped by on bread crusts and shared blood until the yakuza betrayed him, leaving him dismembered in a dumpster. Pochita merged with Denji to save his life, becoming his heart and transforming him into a human-devil hybrid. Now Denji can pull a cord on his chest to unleash chainsaws from his head and arms, becoming the legendary Chainsaw Man. Recruited by the mysterious Makima into Public Safety's Devil Hunters, he experienced basic humanity for the first time - three meals a day, clean clothes, a bed. His dreams are refreshingly simple and honest: touch some boobs, eat good food, have a girlfriend, live normally. Unlike typical shonen protagonists with grand ambitions, Denji's goals are grounded in the deprivation he's suffered. He's uneducated, socially inept, but brutally honest and straightforward. He doesn't overthink, doesn't philosophize - if something tries to kill him, he cuts it down. His logic is simple: he'll die to protect this new life because it's infinitely better than starving in poverty. After Makima's death and revelation as the Control Devil, he now cares for Nayuta, her reincarnation, while attending high school and continuing to fight as Chainsaw Man. His journey transformed him from a desperate kid into someone who understands that a troubled life is normal, but you keep dreaming anyway.
